VA’s Big Sign-In Shake-Up: What Veterans Need to Know!
Hello Veterans and beneficiaries! The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is making an important change to how you access your online services, and we’re here to break down what it means for you. Soon, the VA will simplify its online sign-in process, reducing the number of available account options.
Why Is This Change Happening?
For years, Veterans have asked the VA to make online access simpler. Currently, there are four sign-in options: Login.gov, ID.me, My HealtheVet, and DS logon. By transitioning to just two main options – Login.gov and ID.me – by 2025, the VA aims to provide a much smoother and less confusing experience.
But it’s not just about simplicity. This transition is crucial for meeting updated federal security standards and, most importantly, protecting your identity and benefits from scammers. Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics, and the VA needs to evolve its protections to stay ahead. Login.gov and ID.me are designed to meet these robust security requirements.
Another significant benefit is that these two accounts are widely adopted across the government. This means you can often use your Login.gov or ID.me account to manage other federal benefits online, such as those from Social Security or the IRS, making it easier to navigate various government services.
Key Dates You Need to Know
The VA is phasing out two of the current sign-in options:
- My HealtheVet user ID and password will be removed after January 31, 2025.
- DS logon username and password will be removed after September 30, 2025.
If you already use Login.gov or ID.me to access VA online tools, you don’t need to worry about these deadlines. However, if your only way of signing in is currently through My HealtheVet user ID and password or DS logon, it’s time to set up a new Login.gov or ID.me account.
Important: The My HealtheVet health portal itself is not going away; only the specific sign-in method using its unique username and password is being removed. Also, you will not lose any data or benefits if you don’t meet these deadlines. You can set up a new Login.gov or ID.me account at any time, and your information will be there just as you left it. You can always manage your care and benefits by phone or in person as well.
Choosing Between Login.gov and ID.me
Many Veterans wonder which option to pick. Both Login.gov and ID.me are secure, meet modern security standards, and allow for single, secure access to VA benefits and other federal services. The choice often comes down to personal preference and the documents you have.
Here’s a distinction to help you decide:
- Login.gov is the government’s own account provider, created and maintained by the General Services Administration (GSA).
- ID.me is a non-government account provider that contracts with government and non-government organizations.
One key difference lies in the types of identification documents they accept:
- Login.gov typically requires a driver’s license or state ID from one of the 50 U.S. states.
- ID.me accepts a broader range of documents, including passports and driver’s licenses expired within the past year. If you don’t have a current driver’s license or state ID, ID.me is often the better choice.
How to Create Your New Account
The process starts at VA.gov or the VA Health and Benefits mobile app. Select “Sign In” to begin creating a new account.
For either provider, you will need:
- An email address that only you have access to and use.
- A unique password (minimum 8-12 characters depending on the provider).
- To set up multi-factor authentication (MFA). This adds an extra layer of security and can involve a text message, phone call code, or a passkey.
- To complete an identity verification process the first time you use your new account for VA health or benefits. This typically requires documents like your driver’s license or state-issued ID, and your Social Security number.
Overcoming Common Challenges
The VA understands that setting up these accounts can be complex. Here are solutions for common issues:
- No Current Driver’s License or State ID? Choose ID.me. It accepts expired licenses (within the past year) and passports, or you can use their video call option or visit a participating UPS store.
- No Phone Number in Your Name? Most Veterans in this situation choose ID.me and use their video call process with a trusted agent. You’ll show documents like a Social Security card, utility bill, or W-2. For Login.gov, you can still get an account by choosing the “Verify by Mail” option.
- No Social Security Card? If you have a phone plan in your name and a valid ID (like a driver’s license or passport), you might not need your physical Social Security card for online self-service. If you need to verify via a video call or in person, other documents like your DD214, W-2, paystub, or a bank statement with your full name and Social Security number can often be used to prove your SSN.
- No Smartphone? You can still use a flip phone or landline for multi-factor authentication codes. To create the account and start verification, you’ll need a device like a computer or tablet. In-person options are also available.
In-Person Verification Options
For those who prefer or need in-person assistance:
- Login.gov partners with the United States Postal Service (USPS) for in-person identity verification at over 18,000 participating locations. You can generate a barcode online and bring it with your ID to a participating post office.
- ID.me has a pilot program with UPS stores, allowing Veterans to visit a participating location (walk-in or appointment) to get verified. Trained staff can help connect you to an ID.me agent via video call. This is a great option for those with limited access to technology.
Where to Get Support
If you’re facing difficulties, help is available:
- VA.gov has step-by-step guides and answers to common questions.
- The best way to get direct support is to submit an online support ticket directly with the sign-in service provider:
- For Login.gov: Visit www.Login.gov/contact/ and scroll to the section for submitting a help ticket.
- For ID.me: Go to help.id.me and scroll to the “contact support” button to submit a ticket. The support teams can see into your account and help with specific issues.
- The VA is also holding in-person support sessions across the country. Keep an eye out for announcements from your local VA locations.
The VA is committed to helping all Veterans successfully transition to these new, more secure, and simplified sign-in options. Don’t wait until the deadline – get set up today!
