Revolutionizing Federal Procurement: Trump Administration Aims for Common Sense

For too long, federal procurement has been synonymous with inefficiency and outlandish spending. Stories of $10,000 toilet seats and $1,200 coffee cups are not just urban legends; they reflect a system bogged down by waste, confusion, and red tape. The current Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), a sprawling document exceeding 2,000 pages and 3,000 directives, has become a byzantine maze criticized by both government insiders and private sector entities.

Under President Trump’s leadership, however, revolutionary reform is finally underway. The administration issued an executive order titled “Restoring Common Sense to Federal Procurement” on April 15th, signaling a commitment to overhaul the FAR and the nearly $1 trillion in government spending it governs annually.

The core goal is to inject common sense, innovation, competition, and value into federal procurement. The current process often benefits ineffective and entrenched vendors who can afford the massive compliance costs, disadvantaging smaller, potentially more innovative companies. This reform aims to level the playing field and decrease the ultimate cost to the taxpayer.

Key aspects of the planned overhaul include:

  • Simplifying the FAR with plain English.
  • Eliminating nearly all non-statutory and duplicative regulations.
  • Removing DEI, waste, and wokeness.
  • Adding helpful buyer guides in place of complex requirements.
  • Focusing on results above all else – the best products and services at the best cost.
  • Ending the procurement of useless and wasteful products like paper straws.

Examples of the current FAR’s absurdity include requirements to submit every paper document double-sided on paper with at least 30% post-consumer fiber and mandatory employee training against texting and driving, even though most states already have such bans. These are just a fraction of the tens of thousands of complex regulations that require a large workforce to enforce and significant resources for businesses to comply with.

The administration also plans to bring an unprecedented level of transparency to the procurement process by creating a brand-new website that will allow easy access to regulatory updates, buyer guides, and overall process information.

The message is clear: “Good enough for government work” is no longer acceptable. This FAR overhaul aims to create a procurement system that fosters efficiency, boosts competition and innovation, and ultimately serves the taxpayer better.
